The first FO of the year

It's nice that the first thing I knit this year was for charity. My friend Charlotte forwarded on a plea from a daughter of her friend who wanted to collect 100 hand-knit caps to gives to Caps for Kids as a service project for her Bas Mitzvah. (Nice idea. I don't recall having to do that for mine.) I finished it a few days ago; it's a very simple design, but the plain rectangular shape when laying flat turns into rather cute "ears" when worn sideways on the head. For the record, I used Red Heart Plush that I had laying around (I have no clue why), doubled on a US. 10.5. 60 stitches in circumference, about 1.5 ins. ribbing, then stockinette for about 7 ins. At the top there's no shaping, just do a three needle bind off with half the stitches on either side. It's reversible, or decorate the points with tassels, pompoms, googly eyes, etc.

I have been to several bar/bat mitzvahs in recent years that involved service projects. At the point in the ceremony where the bar/bat mitzvah gets to make a speech, they have spoken about their service project and what it means to them... very personal and character building for a 13 year old. I am not sure how this trend started, but I like it a lot. It at least momentarily brings the concepts and importance of doing mitzvot, tzedukah and tikun olam to the forefront of a day that (in many cases) had become a big party focussed on the bar/bat mitvah.

If you do a hat like that a bit longer, you can also pull in the points and sew them together at the underside. You still have two corners to hang tassles from if you like. And the shape is a bit different.

Leigh,

Well, this is what happens when you look at the picture before reading the text: "Hmmm...Leigh made a piece of a sweater; no, of course not! It's a huge dishcloth....a very wide purse? I know! It's a big swatch designed to demonstrate nice even stitches. Or is it a hat? Naaaa..."
Oh, well..just can't resist looking at pictures first. I would like that calendar, Leigh! Thanks.

Leigh, Congratulations on your new pattern in this issue of Vogue Knitting. It took me a few days to get to Barnes and Noble to get my copy [you know how bohemian this Portland is] but I am sure glad I did.

I would have gotten a copy earlier if I had a lovely calendar to make notations on, but avast, the calendar fairy has not yet visited.

Hugs and cuddles to you and aunt Phylis Stein. Is her plea being met for her beloved amputees? So glad she dumped that bastard of a husband and got on with her life.

Always the best,

Gary

My preference is to sew big rings (you know the plastic ones for hanging curtains?) to the corners and cover them with matching or contrasting yarn. This makes it possible to communicate with Mars, or to pick up satellite radio - your choice.
